Here are some images from a self conducted experimental session in the print studios, which I created when learning to Mono-print. I had originally intended to experiment with Etching, however as I am completely new to these processes the technician suggested I begin with Mono-printing as it is a simpler process. Inspired by the digital images i produced in response to my research on artist Christopher Jonassen, I decided to continue with the theme of outer space, and produced these images following further research on astronomy charts. I found it fairly difficult to create the effect of a rounded sphere when drawing the planets, however this is something i will practice and revise at a later date.

Technical Derpiculties

Step 1. Connect RA drive to equatorial mount

Step 2. Wait weeks for the sky to clear up.

Step 3. Determine that it is a great night for astrophotography.

Step 4. Promise your friends you will have an image of Saturn in the coming days.

Step 5. Align equatorial mount with celestial north pole.

Step 6. Attatch conterweights and optical tube then balance the shit out of everything.

Step 6. Zero in target scope.

Step 7. Notice how Saturn looks brighter than you’ve ever seen it since it’s opposition is at the end of the month.

Step 8. Drop your expensive #80A optical filter in the dark wet grass.

Step 9. Attatch battery pack and countrol pannel for RA drive.

Step 10. Drop your expensive Barlow lens in the dark wet grass.

Step 11. Test bahtinov mask with naked eye even though your eyesight is horrible. It works fantastically.

Step 12. Center Saturn as nearly as possible in high magnification and activate RA drive.

Step 13. Insert astro imager into focuser drawtube, attach to your computer.

Step 14. Windows tells you there is no preview option available which is a lie.

Step 15. Get the preview screen working, only to find the camera is not picking up any light.

Step 16. Ascertain that Saturn is still centered using the target scope. It is. Try fiddling with the focus wheel.

Step 17. Frantically disconnect everything and reconnect it again, sometimes that works. Set all settings to default.

Step 18. Remove imager and insert eyepiece to see what the hell is going on. There is Saturn, just a little blurry. Dew is taking over.

Step 19. Discover the camera is working by shining a flashlight into the objective.

Step 20. Discover every single piece of equipment in the field is soaked with dew and there is no point continuing even if you did get the camera to work correctly.

Step 21. Hate everything
